Military Care Packages - A Little Bit of Home

Philanthropy is defined as the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind. Who is more deserving of that effort then the men and women serving their country in the military, often in harm’s way?

Imagine that you are in the military stationed overseas, in Iraq or Afghanistan. You’re far from home and far from familiar sights and sounds. Imagine receiving a package -- from someone you know at home, or possibly a stranger -- filled with items including toiletries, puzzles, picture frames and more.  For 200 US troops, 30 of whom are related to Tyler employees or with ties to the Albany capital district, this care package is a reality thanks to the generous employees at Versatrans.  In early January Versatrans employees, in partnership with the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post #1520, volunteered their time and packed the donated items for shipment to the troops.

While this project is an example of Versatrans’ employees giving their time and effort caring for their fellow man, it is just one way employees contribute to their community. “Through volunteering I help those less fortunate than I, or those who need assistance or encouragement. I can make a difference and that’s important to me,” commented Trisha Seaburg, technical support specialist. 

Philanthropy is deeply woven into Versatrans’ culture, and volunteerism is encouraged and supported. Employees are offered paid time off each month to participate in community service activities such as Meals on Wheels, local blood drives and Adopt-A-Highway. According to Ted Thien, vice president of Versatrans sales and marketing, “We recognize that our employees want to give back to their community and make a positive contribution. We are happy to help -- we all benefit from this effort.”
